Flora

Portugal is full of greenery, incl. due to the drought-resistant oak that grows on its territory. Other characteristic tree species include cork oak(in the Publications south of the Tagus River) and Mediterranean pine(coast). Treelike heather, lavender and rosemary are also common. If in the north of Portugal acidophilic(i.e., most developed in an acidic environment) oak forests are king, in the central and southern parts of the country, thermophilic round-leaved oaks prevail. The further south you go, the more common cork oaks are.

The southern coast of Portugal is dominated by pine forests, dune vegetation, the so-called. salt water(as the name suggests, plants that thrive in salty ground) and macchia(plant formation typical of Mediterranean regions, usually low-growing trees with hard leaves, wild olives and aromatic green plants).

As a result of long travels of the former Portuguese and persistent colonization, among other things, various exotic plants that do not occur in nature have been vaccinated throughout the country. Mostly we are talking about flowers and shrubs originating directly from Brazil, the Far East or Australia(for example, eucalyptus), which we find on the streets of Portugal, in parks and in private gardens. Picturesque olive groves, extensive vines and ubiquitous orchards are also important elements of the Portuguese flora.

Fauna

As for the fauna, grazing cows are most often found in the mountain pastures of Portugal. The flora and fauna of the northern parts of the country are more reminiscent of the landscape of Central Europe than the Mediterranean. Fauna, closely related to Mediterranean vegetation, is characteristic of the central and southern regions of Portugal. Almost 25% of Portuguese mammals are endangered. The most interesting representatives of the Portuguese fauna are: the endangered monk seal (an unusual pinniped mammal), the Iberian lynx, the North Atlantic whale and mammals from the order of bats - dwarf and endemic (living in the Azores) common mud (Nyctalus azoreum). Under the Portuguese sky you can see, among others, soaring vultures, gannets and red partridges. Among the rocks and bushes, there are local reptiles: newts(for example, Waltla newt, endemic to Iberia), snakes and lizards.

Leisure

Portugal is one of the key European surf centers. Due to the fact that the shores of the country are washed by the waters of the Atlantic, known for its violent disposition, you can ride here all year round.

The world's largest waves - officially confirmed - off the coast of Nazare. It is here that surfers set records for the Guinness Book, saddle waves 30 m high. Slightly less famous, but no less steep, is the beach of the city of Peniche. An interesting wave "European pipe" is formed here, and international competitions are held. Also, excellent surfing conditions (including for beginners) can be found in Pal do Mar in Madeira, Ericeira, Sagres, Carcavelos.

In addition to pure surfing in Portugal, windsurfing and kitesurfing are practiced, as well as yachting and fishing, including shark and blue marlin. Vale do Lobo, in the south of the country, has tennis courts and golf clubs. For an unforgettable diving visit, they drop in the Algarve, famous for its underwater caves, in Madeira - in the Garajau Marine Reserve, or in the Azores.

Portugal for children

It is not only possible, but also necessary to take children with you to Portugal. The climate is excellent, the flight is short, the cuisine is delicious, and there is so much entertainment that you just can't figure out which city to go to. The best option is Lisbon. There is a zoo in the capital, where you can pet fluffy rabbits, kids or ride a cable car over the enclosures with predators. In the aquarium, children will be ready to spend the whole day - as well as in the KidZania center, where they will have the opportunity to master adult professions.

Porto also has an oceanarium, as well as a planetarium(Rua das Estrelas, 4150-762), an interactive adventure museum World of Discoveries, a magical bookstore "Lello", which is the creator of Harry Potter J.K. Rowling loved to visit. Several water parks are located in the Algarve, Faro, Lagos, near Albufeira. In the same place, in the Algarve, several zoos are open, for example, in Lagos, a rope park and sports complexes. In Madeira, all entertainment - zoos, parks, water parks, botanical gardens - are concentrated in Funchal.

When is the best time to go?

The main flow of tourists occupies Portugal from mid-May to late September. During these months, the country is especially warm and dry, which is appreciated by both fans of excursions and fans of beach holidays. Daytime temperature is between +23°C and +28°C, at night - around +16°C, so sweaters and trousers should be brought. Winters in Portugal are mild, but rainy, during the day the temperature varies between +12°C and +17°C, at night it is around +6°C.

The hottest summer is in Lisbon and Funchal. The warmest water is on the southern coast of Madeira and in Faro. In the north of the country, it is cooler even in summer. The swimming season opens with Madeira: the most daring swim here from the end of April to December. In Albufeira and Faro, swimwear is available in June and September. You can surf the whole year round, but for beginners, May-September are more suitable, and for professionals - October, November and April.
