A sustainable vacation in a leafy location

If you want to experience nature in a more eco-friendly way, then look no further! With numerous options for green nature houses all across Europe, you get a chance to choose from staying in the woods, in the mountains, by the water, near the sea, or simply in the middle of nowhere.

How to know if your accommodation of choice is sustainable? On this page you have a selection of green houses. Here are some characteristics of our eco holiday housing options.First of all, owners will most likely make it clear that the house is getting energy or water from a renewable source – like solar panels for example. Such places will definitely have a ban on single-use plastic or other items, as well as banning the use of chemicals at all steps of the accommodation process (laundry, cleaning, even the personal hygiene products available for the guest). These are just some examples, so that you have an idea what to look for when choosing. After all, this planet is ours to save and we need to deeply think about our actions, as even the smallest one may bring large difficulties.

Eco-friendly Europe

In recent years, the European Union and its members have been implementing numerous new guidelines to ensure the improvement of the environmental crisis we are experiencing. With our green houses we contribute to a greener planet together!

The European Commission has rewarded Silly as a sustainable tourism destination. This is a town in Western Belgium, known for its charm, but the most beautiful part undoubtedly is the mystical forest Hallerbos (Halle Forest). If you take photos here, nobody is going to believe that they are real. The spectacular view of a mystical forest, covered in a dense purple carpet of flowers is unforgettable. The flower is called Bluebell and starts to bloom in the spring up to early summer. The foggy conditions of the area create a fairytale-like picture and have made this forest a favorite place for photographers. Some scientists are arguing that this forest has been densely wooded at least in the last 300 years.

A little bit to the south from there, in Italy, there is a true paradise. Named as one of the most romantic destinations in Europe, this place is also preferred by gastronomists and adrenaline seekers. It is a colorful combination of peaceful nature, amazing local food and crazy outdoor sports – Monte Isola is a promise for an adventure of a lifetime. This small but magical municipality consists of three islands and is located just a few kilometers away from one of Italy’s iconic destinations – Milan. The shores of the islands are washed by the waters of Lake Iseo – the fourth largest lake in Lombardy. The area around the lake is one of the last in the whole region of Northern Italy to have successfully preserved its environment – green mountains and crystal blue waters. All three islands can be visited and there are even lake ferries operating on a schedule.

An interesting option, especially for families is staying in a green nature house, and visiting nearby farms to help with the activities. This is a popular practice in Germany, where people like to go with their children to a milk farm, where the children can help with the animals and learn a lot about the local traditions. Another option is to help with harvest – some of the farmers usually provide free meals to those who participate in the activities (as a form of payment).

And of course, you can also visit the Netherlands – a country where environment conservation is on another level. Even the Dutch themselves prove it every day by using their bicycles for their daily commuting. The excellent infrastructure for cyclers provides for a smooth ride and a great experience of almost any park, lake area, town or municipality. You can even easily travel to Belgium or Germany by bike depending on your location. Our own favourite route from the more than 30 thousand kilometers of paths, is the Breda Border Loop. This trial will take you on an unforgettable ride along the Mark River into the beautiful countryside filled with farms and livestock roaming free.

Activities

With more than 60 kilometers of pedestrian trails not only around the town, but also outside of it, Silly offers a lot to visitors in terms of activities. On its brand new cycling network (for which you need a reservation), you can explore not one but all of the six castles scattered across wonderful parks with dense vegetation. The architecture is one of a kind – with numerous churches and typical old farms and houses, all of which you can explore. There is a 24 kilometers circuit tour which takes you on an adventure to discover the 8 villages of Silly. The region is also known for the implementation of a slow food concept among its producers and on the tour you also get a pre-made lunch kit with locally made slow-food products.

If going for a hike or cycling for kilometers along scenic panoramas is your definition of vacation, put the municipality of Monte Isola on top of your travel wish list. There are old paths connecting all of the 11 villages on the islands, and even if you don’t have your own bike, you can rent one there. One of the most beautiful trekking routes in the area is the one to the Shrine of Madonna della Ceriola. On this 80-minute hike you will come across some of the most picturesque spots all across the islands with a 360-panoramic view of the shores.
