There are more than 130 volcanoes in Iceland. Some of these are very active and some are not. For instance, the Grimsvotn system is one of the most volatile volcanoes in the country. Also, there are some systems in Iceland that are considered unstable and frightening. One of these is Hekla volcano, which is also known as Gateway to Hell.

There are three national parks in Iceland: Vatnajökull National Park, Snæfellsjökull National Park, and Þingvellir National Park. Vatnajkull National Park is situated in the middle of Iceland's glaciers and its surrounding areas. Visitors have a chance to roam and admire the highland plateau and the volcanic table, as well as three volcanoes. The highlight of the park is the glacial river system, which flows through the park's highland plateau. A mighty waterfall called Dettifoss has formed due to glacial floods carving through the canyon in the northern parts of the plateau. This is the most powerfall waterfall in Europe due to its width of 100 m and enormous water debit.

Activities

Hundreds of tours take tourists on an adventure across the volcanic territories of Iceland. There is a 4-hours-long route on Reykjanes Peninsula, which will take you through a geothermal area with many geysers. Moreover, Lake Kleifarvatn is also along this route and presents a wonderful place for panoramic views and photos to capture this unforgettable experience. A jeep tour is also available for visitors and it will take you to the top of a craters faster than you can say ‘volcano’.

During a specific time frame between October and March when the temperatures are low enough and allow for it, a guide will be happy to take you on an adventure not only on top but also inside an otherwise moving river of ice – a glacier. The natural glacier ice caves are remarkable and truly an unforgettable experience you will remember for the rest of your life.

Skiing and snowboarding is also a great way to discover the country, however a more popular method of roaming the wild areas of Iceland is by using snowmobiles or dog sleds. In the summer, you can explore the glaciers and the volcanoes on a hike, however bear in mind that such hikes are not suitable for beginners and it is always a good idea to be accompanied by a guide or a local. In the same season, you can also go to the coast where you will be able to discover the Arctic Ocean by scuba diving in its cold waters.
