The east of the province of Gelderland is formed by the Achterhoek, a beautiful region characterized by its typical semi-open landscape landscape. You can also cycle and walk along wooded banks, hedges, farmland and vineyards. The area around Winterswijk in particular is very popular with walkers and cyclists. Partly for this reason, the area around this place was declared a real National Landscape in 2008. Are you curious about what this versatile region has to offer you during your vacation, in addition to hiking and cycling pleasure? Then read on!
Spend the night in the Achterhoek
Gelderland is the largest of the 12 Dutch provinces. This means that there is plenty of room for natural beauty, but also for recreation. Those who go on holiday in the Achterhoek will enjoy themselves for a long time. For days? For weeks! An accommodation in the nature of Gelderland is the ideal starting point to discover the gems of the Achterhoek landscape at your own pace. Whoever goes away for a romantic week, book one of the attractive Bed & Breakfasts, hikers' cabins or pipo wagons. Are you coming with more? Then a luxury holiday home or large group accommodation might be something for you.
On holiday you of course do not have to lack in luxury and comfort. Discover the area
The quiet Achterhoek is perfect for rural tourism. You will therefore find many different accommodation options. Of these, you can book more than 400 through Natuurhuisje, ranging from pipowagen and chalet to rural villa or yurt. Young and old can go in any direction from a nature house in the Achterhoek, because culture and nature go hand in hand here. For example, you will find numerous castles, estates and country houses, which in some cases can also be visited. Many castles can be found around the village of Vorden in Gelderland, no fewer than eight! You can visit all eight cycling along the Achtkastelenroute. A wine tasting at one of the vineyards or a visit to Museum MORE are also possible. And what about a few days of hopping at the famous Zwarte Cross in Lichtenvoorde, the largest motocross event in Western Europe?
If you prefer to take it a bit easier, it is possible to find peace in the varied nature of the Achterhoek. The region is in fact rich in nature reserves and other natural beauty. Some examples of this are the Vragenderveen, the Korenburgerveen, the Lochemse Berg and the Quarry. Because the Achterhoek is on the border with Germany, it is also possible to discover the natural and cultural highlights of our eastern neighbors during your holiday in this area. For example, visit the Zwillbrocker Venn with its dozens of flamingos and the largest black-headed gull colony in Germany, or take a city walk through atmospheric places such as Bocholt, Emmerik or Vreden. You will certainly not be bored here!
However, you do not necessarily have to cross the border with Germany for a nice city or village walk. Also in the Achterhoek itself there are plenty of cozy places to be found where you can enjoy a day or part of it in the shopping streets, at events, in museums or in the various catering establishments. A few examples of this are Book Town Bredevoort, esdorp Aalten, Doetinchem, former Hanseatic city of Zutphen, Lochem and of course the well-known village of Winterswijk. A little further away, outside the Achterhoek, you will find the towns of Nijmegen, Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Harderwijk, Tiel and Ede. Because of the good road connections and relatively short distances in the Netherlands, these places are definitely worth a visit when you stay in a holiday home in the Achterhoek.
Not located in the Achterhoek, but beautiful to visit when you are in Gelderland, is of course the Veluwe. This enormously wooded area is by far the most famous nature reserve in the country. In less than an hour's drive from your holiday home in the Achterhoek you are already standing with both feet on a purple heath, in the vast forests or on top of a sand drift. The Veluwe is large, green and especially huge. You can therefore go in all directions. There is plenty to do for both young and old. Rent a mountain bike or segway and cross through the woods, view exceptional works of art in the Kröller Müller Museum, take a walk with
