Nature and surroundings
National Park Weerribben-Wieden is a national park in the province of Overijssel, municipality of Steenwijkerland. The national park is the largest contiguous low moor swamp of northwestern Europe. The park was founded in 1992. About 1000 hectares of the area are still used for the cultivation of dekriet. The Kalenberg dekriet is known from time immemorial. Reed lands are often still exploited by small private entrepreneurs from the villages of Kalenberg and Ossenzijl for the production of dekriet. When not managed, a reedland becomes more overgrown and gives way to swamp forest. By means of small watermills, which are scattered in the area, water is brought on top of the reed beds, which therefore become less likely to acidify and remain productive for longer. The Weerribben is characterized by a wide variety of marsh plants and animals. The otter has been successfully reintroduced.
