This nature house is a charming 2-person (studio) gîte, located in the Norman bocage landscape in Calvados. The gîte, part of a traditional longère, is an ideal starting point for wonderful walks, bike rides, and sightseeing tours. The private entrance opens onto a balcony with a fantastic, unobstructed view of the landscape. The studio has been tastefully and lovingly decorated with vintage furniture and art. It features a private luxury bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen. Our property, featuring wild plants and a pond, includes an organic permaculture garden and a food forest, which guests may use by arrangement. We strive for self-sufficiency and biodiversity (circular wastewater system) and are happy to share these with you. Experience the tranquility of a hilly setting with two creative and environmentally conscious people. To encourage mindful energy use, we charge for electricity per kWh. Together, we’re building a bright future—and we’d love to share it with you.
Nature and surroundings
Unwind in an off-the-beaten-path area in Montchamp, Valdallière. Right behind the cottage, there’s a forest trail offering views of “Les Collines Normandes.” There are varied hiking and biking trails along winding roads, through forests, past castles, and through small villages. It’s beautiful and peaceful here in every season. Mont St. Michel is an hour’s drive away, and so are the endless beaches of Lower Normandy. We’re right next to Suisse Normandie, with its towering cliffs and canoe trips on the Orne River. Discover historic cities such as Caen, Bayeux, Granville, and Falaise. Further afield lie the D-Day beaches. A 20-minute drive away is the town of Vire, which offers many amenities, including shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and a train station. During the summer months, there are many cultural events, as well as numerous local markets and flea markets. Sample the Normandy specialties. Once back home, relax on the gîte’s balcony and let your mind wander through the Viking-era landscape, gazing out over the Bocage.

The owners of the house, Sjoerd and Mees, are incredibly hospitable and warm and gave us lots of tips on hikes in the area. We were even allowed to pick vegetables from the garden ourselves, including delicious tomatoes and zucchini. The cottage is very tastefully decorated and comfortable. The kitchen is small, so it’s only suitable for simple meals. In addition to the patio by our entrance, we could also use a nice, secluded seating area on the property.
The starry sky is truly amazing to see here at night. We mochten zelf groenten uit de moestuin halen, waaronder heerlijke tomaten en courgettes. Het huisje is zeer smaakvol ingericht en comfortabel. De keuken is klein dus alleen geschikt voor simpele maaltijden. Naast het terras bij onze ingang konden we ook gebruik maken van een fijne, afgeschermde zitplek op het terrein.

There are wonderful hiking trails in the immediate vicinity. Inside the cottage, there was a folder with various hiking routes that are very well marked and easy to follow. It’s a bit of a drive to the coast—about 1.5 hours on average. The town of Vire (a 20-minute drive) is the nearest shopping town, with a wide variety of stores and a lovely museum. If you want to have fresh bread for breakfast in the morning, you’ll have to drive 8 km to the nearest village. Unfortunately, it was incredibly dry and hot when we were there, but we’ll definitely be back in the spring or early summer. This cottage is highly recommended if you enjoy peace and quiet, hiking, and reading. Unfortunately, it was very hot the last few days, so we were glad we’d brought our own quiet fan because it barely cooled down at night.

De stad Vire (20 minuten rijden) is de dichtstbijzijnde winkelstad met een groot aanbod aan winkels en een mooi museum. Als je s ochtends met vers brood wilt ontbijten moet je wel 8 km rijden naar het dichtstbijzijnde dorp. Het was helaas ontzettend droog en heet toen we er waren maar we komen zeker een keer terug in de lente of vroege zomer. Dit huisje is echt een aanrader als je houdt van rust, wandelen en lezen. Helaas was het wel erg heet de laatste dagen dus we waren blij dat we onze eigen stille ventilator hadden meegenomen want het koelde s nachts amper af.
