You will be ferried by boat to a private jetty (tide permitting) where a small and sturdy cabin rests in the cool shade of mature trees just a few metres from the beautiful river Guadiana, the border between Portugal and Spain. Sited in its own quiet valley, lined with olive and almond trees, the cabin is a 25 minute walk on a roman track from the shops and bars of Sanlucar de Guadiana, which is a short ferry ride from Alcoutim in Portugal. The Moroccan style bedroom is simple and cosy, with a small wood burning stove. The bedroom opens onto a similar sized covered deck area with open sides, a kitchen counter and washbasin with a mains water supply, sofa-bed, table and benches. The compost loo is in a separate little hut and along one side of the cabin there’s an outdoor heated shower. Solar power provides for lights, charging of small electronic devices like lap tops and phones and runs the fridge. There's also a sturdy rowing boat available for the adventurous to explore the river.
Nature and surroundings
The large expanse of hills behind the cabin are great for hiking and are home to deer, wild boar and occasional flocks of sheep or goats. Depending on the time of year, a large variety of birdlife may be observed including bee-eaters, golden orioles, hoopoes, egrets, storks, eagle owls, buzzards, blue rock thrushes to name a few. Your hosts live in a small house, also solar powered, just two minutes from the cabin, but hidden by trees. They grow their own produce and keep a couple of dogs, some cats and chickens .July and August can be very hot (>40C) and the river is occasionally noisy in summer with private motor boats. However, the nights are normally very quiet and star-studded all year round. A stand of tall reeds on the river bank provides for complete privacy at the cabin. Tide permitting you can swim or fish from the private jetty, with a mind to the currents, in one of the cleanest rivers in Europe.
