La Axarquía La Axarquía is a nature reserve that stretches across the rugged southern slope of the Sierra de Tejeda, east of Malaga. The landscape is very rugged because of the Penibetic Mountains that lie nearby. The area is characterized by steep rocky slopes covered with pines, deep ravines, vineyards, olive groves and "Pueblos Blancos" (white mountain villages). The area is spectacular for hiking, trekking and mountain biking. The towns of Cómpeta and Canillas de Albaida are good starting points to begin several day hikes. Over barren limestone slopes high above the villages, through deep, densely forested valleys and over warm, lower hills descending quickly to the sea, where tropical fruits such as avocado and mango are grown. The El Saltillo hiking trail is known as the Caminito del Rey of the Axarquía. The hiking trail is also part of the Gran Senda de Malaga. The start of this beautiful walk is only 5 kilometers from our Bed & Breakfast.
