The nature house is a traditional local stone built Cretan cottage with many beautiful architectural features, including exposed stone walls and arches. It has a separate bedroom and bathroom, and open-plan lounge / kitchen / dining room. The house is finished and equipped to a very high standard, including a 150cm orthopaedic bed dressed in French linen bedding. Two sets of French doors open onto a stone-paved terrace and private garden. A stone staircase lead to a large roof terrace with panoramic views over the White Mountains, Psiloritis and nearby Kefalas village. A wood stove provides heating and an oven. The solid stone walls provide insulation and beautifully carved ceiling fans enhance circulation of air. Electricity is provided by an autonomous Photo-voltaic system. A solar heater provides hot water.

Nature and surroundings

The nature house set in an olive grove on a 7700sqm plot, located down a dirt track on the outskirts of Kefalas - a traditional village. The property is surrounded by farming and forestry land. Kefalas is well known for its wealth of wild flowers, including orchids (some very rare on Crete). There are numerous nature walks available directly from the house, and many more a short distance away, e.g. the forest between Kefalas and Souri. Kefalas is also ideally situated for exploring Western Crete, including Elafonisi, Balos, Gramvousa, Samaria and many other nearby gorges. Because of the location, the roof terrace leans itself very well to star gazing - a favourite activity with many guests, especially during meteor showers. Sunrise and sunset from the roof terrace can be spectacular. There are many wild birds around, helped by the various water sources nearby, including rivers and Lake Kournas nearby. We can also put you in touch with individuals who organise nature walks.
