In the center of the ancient city, above the Roman Cisterns, one can visit the Byzantine Monastery of St. John and little further away, a castle founded by the Turkish conquerors to suppress the Cretan revolution. For those who love exploring nature, the nearby Diktamos gorge is worth hiking. Lush with tall trees, it has many steep slopes where the endemic herb of Crete, dittany or diktamos, grows.
