This nature house is located next to a former village school, which is our home. We really enjoy living here, partly because we used to work in education in the Netherlands. The house has three bedrooms, one of which opens onto the guest garden. From the other rooms, you can step right out onto the shaded wooden deck. The stylish kitchen is fully equipped, and the tap provides surprisingly delicious drinking water. The rooms have been furnished with care; much of it is recycled or handmade. In the spring, many flowers bloom around the guesthouse, and there’s plenty of birdlife. Cherries, grapes, walnuts, and figs grow in the guest garden. Feel free to pick them! In the fall, you can hear the murmur of the stream and find sweet chestnuts in the forest. During the winter months, you can warm up by the glowing pellet stove. Around midnight, the streetlights go out. In short, it’s a comfortable place with plenty of privacy—perfect for slowing down and enjoying the surrounding nature.
Nature and surroundings
This nature house is located at an elevation of 600 meters in the historic village center of St-Barthélemy-Grozon, between Valence and Le Puy-en-Velay. The Pays du Doux, a rural and forested region in the Ardèche, features rolling hills dotted with chestnut orchards, but also rugged granite cliffs and babbling streams. It’s a great place for hiking and biking, along steep country roads or old railroad tracks like the Dolce Via. From the hilltops, you can see Mont Ventoux, the Vercors, and the Massif Central. The gîte offers a stunning view and is situated in a quiet, yet not isolated, location. Down in the village, there’s a small bar that also serves food. Via the winding roads, you can reach Lamastre by car in 10 minutes (weekly markets, supermarket, gas station, ATM) or, a little further away, the charming villages of Vernoux, Boffres, and Désaignes, where there are also swimming spots. The Rhône Valley (Valence, Tain-l’Hermitage) is a 45-minute drive away. There are plenty of restaurants, museums, and châteaux, and in the summer, the famous Mastrou steam train runs.
