Our monastery (joke) farm is called “Juffertje in het Groen” (Little Lady in the Green). Tucked away in a forest on the edge of the Ter Wupping stream valley and ash tree grove, it’s a place where silence reigns. A place to take a moment to catch your breath. Inside, in the attic, five cozy bedrooms await—each one different, yet all similar in their own way—with comfortable beds and a private sink. The showers and restrooms are located in the hallway, just like in the old days. Illustrator and designer Marjan Bey was given “carte blanche” and gave each room its own unique character. Don’t expect a run-of-the-mill stay! Downstairs, you’ll find the shared kitchen-living area—the beating heart of the house. Here, you can prepare breakfast, cook, share stories, or simply relax after a long walk or bike ride. After 11:00 p.m., the house falls silent! Monica and Leo warmly welcome you to their B&B (Bed and Bath)
Nature and surroundings
Westerwolde, a hidden gem brimming with natural beauty, winding paths, bocage landscapes, primeval forests, and buildings full of character. No vast fields or distant horizons, no straight lines but winding roads, intimate patches of heathland, forest, and organic farmland. The rolling landscape makes you wonder: is this really Groningen? The backbone of Westerwolde is the Ruiten Aa—a meandering stream flanked on both sides by diverse forests over 1,000 years old. Halfway along, in Ter Wupping, the Westerwoldse Aa joins the Ruiten and Mussel Aa, and the landscape continues to vary with hedgerows, hay meadows, historic farmhouses, and purple stream banks lined with cattail and willowherb. Kingfishers, beavers, harriers, otters, roe deer, and of course the wolf hide among the rolling fields and centuries-old shifting sand dunes. A wonderful setting for nature and tranquility lovers, whether by bike or on foot. Endless opportunities to get lost and explore.
