The cottage is located at the back of the property and offers a beautiful view of the setting sun. It has all the basic amenities: a bedroom with a double bed, a bedroom with a bunk bed, a shower, and a toilet. The living room and kitchen are in one open space. The kitchen is equipped with a two-burner stove and an oven. From the living room, you can step out onto the raised, enclosed porch, but you’re also welcome to sit elsewhere in the garden or orchard. For colder nights, there’s a small wood stove. Since the cottage runs entirely on solar power, please keep in mind that you can’t use too many appliances at once and that the water heater may need a few minutes to warm up again after you shower (about 10 minutes). Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a small vineyard and a historic gardener’s cottage in the Amsterdam School style. If you love animals, this is the perfect spot—see the photos. Dogs are welcome, provided they don’t chase the animals…
Nature and surroundings
Tent camping is available upon request. There are beautiful hiking and biking trails starting from the property and in the immediate vicinity, mostly along specially constructed paths. The area around Lauwersmeer is also great for hiking. The area is a “dark skies area”; on clear nights, the Milky Way, the stars, and the moon are clearly visible. It’s easy to combine a visit to “De Theefabriek”—with its shop, terrace, and delicious selection of teas—with a trip to the fishing village of Zoutkamp, home to its fishing fleet and Scandinavian-style cottages. You can also spend a day on Schiermonnikoog or go mudflat walking and watch seals from Pieterburen. If you’re more in the mood for some socializing, shopping, and a pub, then Winsum (named the most beautiful village in the Netherlands in 2020) and Groningen aren’t far away.
