You pass an authentic barn on the De Dijck estate. Only then do you see The Studio. Completely new, completely open. Wood from floor to ceiling: warm, light, thoughtfully designed. No interior walls. Downstairs, a kitchenette, table, sofa, and TV. Up on the mezzanine, the bed, with skylights that let the morning light stream in and let you fall asleep under the stars at night. Outside there are two terraces. On the side, you look out onto the greenery. At the back, a sheltered terrace with a hammock and a monumental ash tree. Two terraces, two moods. To the left of the entrance are the Corten steel doors of Guido’s garage. Classic cars, the scent of engines and metal. To the right is your entrance. The contrast between steel and wood says something about this place: nothing is overdone or polished. Music is the inspiration, not as a theme but as a tone. The furniture has a twist that you only notice if you look closely. On the bathroom door and the shower door, you’ll find musical idols as a surprise.
Nature and surroundings
The Studio is located on the De Dijck estate in Philippine, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, nestled among the polders on the border with Belgium. The estate is alive and ever-evolving. The food forest grows a little more each year and is open to the public. In the spring, there are flowers you wouldn’t expect. In the summer, you pick what’s ripe. In the fall, the ground smells of earth and ripe fruit. In the winter, you realize just how vast it really is. There is a wood-burning fire pit by the creek. The pheasants cross the meadow as evening falls. The frogs take over when night falls. The cows in the adjacent pasture are always there. Philippine, a true mussel town with a long port history on the Westerschelde, is a 6-minute bike ride away. Ghent and Bruges are 45 minutes away. The beach is 30 minutes away. The Braakman nature reserve is just a stone’s throw away. A car is necessary; Zeeuws-Vlaanderen has no trains.
