You’ll find our cozy, eco-friendly nature house in beautiful Westerwolde. This house is located on private property and offers peace and privacy. In the large garden, you can enjoy sunbathing, meditating, writing, and relaxing. Next to the cottage, we have an outdoor shower and a meditation/yoga space that you’re welcome to use. From our cottage, you can go on wonderful bike rides and hikes, visit historic fortified towns and artists’ studios, and much more. There’s a small swimming pool nearby, but you can also swim in natural bodies of water in the surrounding area. The Bad Nieuweschans thermal baths are within biking distance. You can bring your own bike or rent one from us. The cottage is generally suitable for two people and is available for rent between April 1 and November 1.
Nature and surroundings
The Westerwolde Nature House is located in the municipality of Westerwolde, a rural municipality in East Groningen with few residents, plenty of nature, and many farms. It’s a wonderful place for anyone seeking space and tranquility. The municipality offers 40 marked hiking trails along meandering stream valleys, ancient forests, sandy lakes, and heathlands. And even on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, you might not encounter a single person. Nearby is the Giezelbaarg, where, at the end of the 16th century, 17 women and 3 men were burned at the stake on suspicion of witchcraft. Today, the Giezelbaarg is open to visitors. There is a small monument, and rumor has it that Wiccan rituals are regularly held there. Another must-see are Groningen’s old churches from the 11th and 12th centuries. Some serve as places of worship, while others function as cultural centers hosting music programs, lectures, and more. There are also festivals nearby: Back to the Beginning (late May), Westerwolde Rijgt (late June), and the Hungry Wolf Festival (mid-July)
