Our former hunting lodge has its origins around 1840, during the period of King Louis-Philippe I. During the renovation work, unexpected traces of the past were discovered: old newspapers hidden under no less than seven layers of wallpaper. Small discoveries that, little by little, revealed the story of the house. The craftsman who took care of the house suspects that the building was created in two stages. First, the ground floor was realized; only later did the floor come on top. This layering can still be felt in the structure of the house. The first inhabitants were members of the Valton family, hosiery makers from Troyes. Their name lives on in the history of the French textile industry: another generation founded the now world-famous brand Petit Bateau in 1920. In the 19th century, many hosiery manufacturers migrated to this vast, wooded region to indulge in a favorite leisure activity of the time: fox hunting.
Nature and surroundings
With a walk of less than 2 kilometers you are at the Lac du Der. The largest artificial lake in Europe where more than 300 species of birds have their property. Bald eagles, cranes and the bittern have been spotted here. The area is as large as park the Hoge Veluwe and around the lake a bicycle path has been built of about 40 kilometers. Even closer are the Outines lakes: ponds dating back to the Middle Ages when the monks of Saint Pierre Abbey built them for fishing. Head out early: that's when you'll see the coypus rats quietly moving through the water. And for spotting a roe deer, you don't even have to be lucky. The other day I was driving down the road at 2:30 p.m. when I had to give way to 10 deer crossing.Bienvenue dans le Domaine du Der! Arno and Leonoor
