The Forest which dates back to the Middle Ages has been protected for the last 200 years and is a haven for all kinds of rare birds and insect species. This isn't your typical rental it's a rustic home filled with stories and memories. Don't expect electric gates or marble tiles here. Instead, you'll find a clean, comfortable space with two open fireplaces for cozy winter nights and a BBQ for summer gatherings.

Six world-class bouldering areas are minutes away. Canoeing on the River Loing makes a great day out (book ahead), and at Grez-sur-Loing you can swim under a medieval bridge. Horse-riding is possible next door, and for those who prefer walking, you can walk to Barbizon — the village that inspired the Impressionists. Fontainebleau, with its palace, gardens and lake, is just a short drive. The châteaux of Fleury, Courances and Vaux-le-Vicomte are nearby too — the last so beautiful that Louis XIV famously had its owner jailed before copying it at Versailles. Barbizon itself is unchanged in centuries and full of cafés, restaurants, and a museum dedicated to its painters.
