Nature house in Rohel

Ready for some rest and relaxation? Or are you just looking for a beautiful setting to explore or, say, to write? Our detached vacation home is located near Lake Tjeukemeer in Friesland. With no Wi-Fi or TV, so you can recharge while focusing on yourself, each other, and nature. Still want to go online? Your own hotspot works here, too. We’re slowly but surely sprucing up this little cottage. We’re reusing materials and incorporating pre-loved furniture. For example, the kitchen is from Sneek, and the round metal table is an old café table from Midlum that belonged to the grandmother of our 89-year-old friend. Café Buitenlust no longer exists, but the little table is now being put to good use. On hot days, the fan—rescued from the streets of Paris 30 years ago—provides you with fan-tastic cooling. The wonderfully large garden surrounding the cottage has several cozy spots to sit—on the front patio or in a sheltered spot out back. When this charming cottage is available, we love to stay there ourselves.

This charming cottage is located in Rohel, near Joure. Nearby, you can enjoy a swim in Lake Tjeukje or go for a walk in the Haulster Woods.
 Discover the NanneWiid or the Het Easterskar marshland, one of the many natural gems of It Fryske Gea. Here you can hike through the mysterious marsh forest and enjoy the view from the bird-watching hut.

 The Tjonger River flows by, with Rottige Meente—an 18th-century peat extraction area—on the opposite bank, now a Natura 2000 site home to otters, bitterns, and kingfishers. The Zuiderzeepad trail also runs through this area.

 Local fruits and vegetables. If you’re lucky, Jan’s produce cart at the start of the trail will be stocked with vegetables. Otherwise, in the summer, you’ll find crates of vegetables and jam just around the corner at the Belshof on Kwekerijweg. Dine at the Duurzame Palingfabriek or pick up groceries at Farmer Bart’s farm store in Rotstergaast. The cities of Sneek and Leeuwarden are a bit further away but easy to drive to and definitely worth a visit. Or go sailing!
