This naturehouse comprises a small farmhouse and yard enclosed by a barn and smaller outbuildings and is let as a whole. It occupies a very private and peaceful setting on a spur between two side valleys looking across the dramatic valley of the Dordogne. The house (now used only occasionally by the owner) has an open plan lounge, dining room and kitchen area on the ground floor with a medium sized bedroom and ensuite shower room in the converted attic. Four steps up from the corner of the lounge is another large room, formerly a barn, with double doors opening onto a covered terrace. Altogether the garden has four terraces: one roofed, one for morning sun, one suitable for sun-loungers and one facing across the main valley, with views over walnut orchards to the cliffs beyond the river Dordogne. Ample shade is provided by a horse-chestnut and a lime at the top of the drive. The grounds are enclosed and very private and are at the end of a no-through road.
Nature and surroundings
The naturehouse is situated within the Natural Park of the Causses du Quercy, a Unesco Global Geopark. The limestone hills are largely wooded but also have open sheep-grazed grassland areas which are very rich in butterflies and wildflowers, including many species of orchid. Birds such as Cuckoo, Hoopoe, Golden Oriole and Nightingale are common. The countryside is excellent for walking or biking. Countless tracks cross the limestone plateaux or follow the smaller river valleys. The track that continues past the cottage climbs up to a long cliff overlooking the river, with the higher peaks of the Auvergne visible on the horizon. There are many medieval villages, chateaux and towns scattered throughout the region, from the extremely attractive villages of Collonges la Rouge, Carrenac, Autoire, Lubressac, to the historic towns of Martel, Sarlat and Gourdon. The spectacular pilgrim cité of Rocamadour, built into a near-vertical cliff face is only 15 minutes away by car.

The combination of stark cliffs, meandering river, ancient old house & so many options for hiking/swimming made this one of our favorite holidays ever. The caretaker Pascal had some suggestions for hikes is also a guide for the area so be sure to ask her for advice. We would have missed one of the most spectacular hikes if we hadn;t spoken to her just 3 days before we were leaving. It;s near Rocamadour; a gorge with 2 old mills at the bottom and breathtaking views. The Saturday market in Sarlat was too commercial for my tastes and we didn;t really have time to visit any of the others, so sadly we missed out on getting any local products or crafts, but even the supermarkets do have the local cheese & wines. Highly recommend to swim in the river often; it's clean, gentle current, & gorgeous. The mosquitos and the heat were a bit too much at times, but not unbearable. You really notice the effects of drought tho: trees turning color already in mid-August!

The house is equipped with everything you need to have a lovely holiday and full of charm and history. It is lovingly decorated with antique items and curiosities, almost like being in a museum. We had an amazing time there (2 weeks). Six hikes (me and the husband, between 4.8 and 11 kilometers, several were high intermediate level), and six cycling adventures (just the husband - 3-5 hour rides) later, plus 3 swims in the beautiful clear Dordogne river, and we feel fit and relaxed! Enjoyed seeing the bats in the barn! There were a lot of mosquitos and some kind of sand flea or something that were biting our ankles and legs and itched something fierce, so I would recommend taking some After Bite or itch relief as there is nothing in the supermarkets in that part of France (maybe a ta pharmacy). It was really hot the first week so we had to keep the fan on the whole night but then it cooled off the second week and we were comfortable just leaving the windows open once we put the screens on.
