The area around Waterlandkerkje is a true paradise for nature lovers. Het Zwin, A unique nature reserve stretching from the Netherlands to Belgium. This tidal area is a nursery for numerous birds and plants with mudflats, salt marshes and salt marshlands. There is something to experience in every season; from nesting avocets to thousands of migratory birds perching on their way to warmer places. An ideal environment for long walks or bike rides along meandering creeks, old farms, reed beds and lookout points where you can spot herons, hares and birds of prey. Also the route along the black polder where you can experience a unique coastal ecosystem up close. Just outside Oostburg is the Groote Gat, a former creek area that is now a beautiful nature reserve. Here you walk past reed beds and grass fields where Scottish Highlanders graze.
