The Bekendelle near Winterswijk is a special and almost fairytale-like nature reserve: an old swamp forest through which the Boven-Slinge stream meanders freely. The area is regarded as one of the most beautiful streamside forests in the Netherlands. Step out the door and you are in the middle of nature, where you can spot the entire woodpecker family. Also a short bike ride away is the unique Hogeveen area of Wooldse Veen. This nature reserve is one of the last remnants of the extensive raised bog that once formed the border between the Netherlands and Germany. There is also plenty to discover culturally. Visit Berenschot's Watermolen, beautifully located along the creek and within walking distance, or enjoy a special culinary experience at Keunenhuis. In addition, taste the local cheeses at Geitenboerderij De Brömmels. Around Winterswijk are several nature reserves with internationally protected status as Natura 2000 areas.
