I designed and built the house together with a friend with much attention and love. The starting point is a two-person "meditation cottage" that exudes peace and quiet and also offers the experience of the outdoors inside. We have built the cottage in the ruins of a barn whose walls have remained standing. These will gradually become overgrown with native climbing plants. The cottage is light and finished with local larch wood. I myself love cooking: a kitchen can never be complete enough. The bathroom is spacious and ample: the bathtub overlooks the edge of the forest. You sleep in a safe but spacious bedstead of 190x220 meters. French doors open onto an intimate and partially walled "monastery garden. Atmosphere, attention and the relationship with the surrounding nature, the silence and the nightly darkness find the main qualities of this special project that I built with much love and that I love to share with you.
Nature and surroundings
The house is located near the entrance to De Hoge Veluwe, at Buitenplaats Koningsweg on the outskirts of Arnhem. It is located on a former military site that, on my initiative since 2011, has been developed into a special living and working area for creatives. At night it is really dark here and on a clear day you can see the Milky Way. You find national park Veluwe Zoom, national park De Hoge Veluwe and the Kröller Müller Museum around the corner. Red deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, and badgers can just walk by during your stay. In addition, Buitenplaats Koningsweg was once part of a huge WW2 German airfield. In the immediate vicinity you can still find exciting traces of this. In order to prevent recognition from the air, the buildings and hangars were not only carefully fitted into the existing landscape but were often designed as farms and barns. One such disguised aircraft hangar stands right behind Behouden Huis in a field.
