Enjoy peace and nature on the outskirts of the Frisian village of Buitenpost. Situated in a rural setting. Sleep in a box bed (with a new, May 2025, soft mattress) in the guesthouse. You’ll wake up to a view of the meadows. Experience the sunrise from your bed. You can use the natural swimming pond, which is a full 20 meters long. Enjoy the beautiful, sweeping view. You can cook using the skottelbraai located under the canopy. A refrigerator, plates, and silverware are provided. There is a kettle (and tea) and a De’Longhi coffee maker with fresh beans (free of charge). The bedroom has blackout curtains, and all windows throughout the entire property are equipped with screens (August 2025). Cooling is provided by fans. Relaxing lounge chairs await you on the large private terrace overlooking the swimming pond and meadows!

Nature and surroundings

There’s plenty to do in the area, including day trips to the Wadden Islands, Ameland, or Schiermonnikoog, or beautiful bike rides. De Kruidhof is Friesland’s largest botanical garden and is located in Buitenpost. The Ice Age Museum is also located here. The express train will take you to Leeuwarden or Groningen for a day trip in just 15 minutes. Dokkum, one of the Eleven Cities, is 15 km away. Enjoy a beautiful bike ride along the Pondjesroute through De Alde Feanen National Park or go for a walk in the Rohel Polder near Buitenpost: the Mem Wedmanpaed. The 2.5-kilometer trail showcases the marshy and peatland areas of the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. Lauwersmeer National Park is 25 km away and offers wonderful opportunities for hiking or biking. Several marked trails are available. The area is a prime spot for birdwatchers. Highly recommended: the Dark Sky Park in Lauwersoog. Dining options in Buitenpost: China Garden, De Zaak café (with breakfast service), pizzerias, and snack bars.

The owner is very friendly, and we received a warm welcome. What I did find disappointing is that the photos don’t show that the owner’s house is right next to the pool. This makes privacy impossible. Because of the nice weather, the owner (and his family, which includes several small children) also used the pool a lot. That’s understandable, of course, but it was still a disappointment for us. If I’d known this beforehand, I wouldn’t have booked it, because we were really looking for peace and privacy, and the description states that this is a private pool. The surroundings are very beautiful, though, and you can sit in the sun in various spots on the property and watch the different animals (cows, sheep, rabbits).

    Nature, peace & environment: 4 /5

It’s a beautifully decorated, spacious cottage. Unfortunately, it was incredibly hot during our visit—too hot for us, so much so that we ended up sleeping on the floor the first night because it was unbearable in the box bed. There’s no air conditioning, and it wasn’t really possible to air out the place either. Also, the curtains are see-through, so once it gets dark, there’s a lack of privacy because you can see right through them from the outside. I found the amenities to be very modern and enjoyed using them.

    - Response from the host
Lisanne and her partner mentioned on Thursday that they would be going to the Lauwersmeer area on Friday, so we invited our children and grandchildren to come swimming at 4 p.m. Lisanne and her partner left that day at 6 p.m.—as it turned out later—to go home, without mentioning this, they stayed less than 24 hours even though they’d booked for 2 nights, and left everything in perfect order. The pool is 32 meters from The Poolhouse, and there are plenty of private spots throughout the garden. The box bed has two windows with screens and blackout curtains, which other guests have raved about. You really won’t be bothered by us at all, but please let us know right away if you have any issues—we want everyone to have a pleasant stay.

A really lovely little house with glass on three sides, fully equipped, and made cozy with homemade art. A comfortable bed and delicious coffee! We also swam laps in the large pool a few times—what a treat! There are charming little towns to visit in the area, and great food to enjoy!

    Nature, peace & environment: 4 /5

The view is beautifully expansive and green, with cows in the background! Unfortunately, on the two evenings/nights we were there, there was a noisy festival nearby (from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.), which meant it wasn’t as peaceful as we’d hoped. We did, however, enjoy some lovely walks during the day along the Lauwersmeer and through the nearby botanical garden!
