Nature and surroundings
The small town of Santa Bárbara de Nexe in the Faro district, with a population of approximately 4,100 (2001), is nestled amid rolling countryside about 10 km northwest of Faro and just 2 km north of the IP1 highway. Once you’ve left Faro and its suburbs behind, you’ll find yourself immersed—especially from January through May—in a green and colorful meadow landscape dotted with almond trees that remains very unspoiled. The noisy tourism found in many coastal towns is nowhere to be found in this tranquil area. In addition, the town has another advantage bestowed by nature: It lies just below a range of hills about 370 m high—but high enough that you can look down on the city of Faro and the Atlantic Ocean. The view to the south across the plain is fantastic, even at night, when the lights of Faro shimmer on the horizon.
