Nature house in Biervliet

The Old Pigsty, an off-grid cottage, is a back-to-basics cabin on the Maanzichthoeve. It’s an old pigsty that’s been converted into a hiker’s cabin. The old trough is still there. The walls are plastered with clay from our polder. There is intentionally no electricity; lighting comes from candles or oil lamps, which are provided. There is a wood stove (wood costs €15 per basket = cost price). There is plenty of seating both inside and outside, and a full set of cooking utensils is provided. You’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag (or comforter), toiletries, and towels. The sleeping platform sleeps 4 people. Mattresses and pillows, including fitted sheets, are provided. Would you like to come with up to 6 people? There’s room for two more in the teepee (the teepee costs an additional €25 per night). You can cook on a tripod over a fire (BBQ or Dutch oven). You can also use a fully equipped kitchen with electricity in our garage. There is a composting toilet and an outdoor shower with hot water. A maximum of one dog is welcome. Dogs must be kept on a leash on the property and must relieve themselves off the property.

Ideally located for nature lovers in a quiet spot between Biervliet and Hoofdplaat in the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen polder, 4 km from the Westerschelde. Situated next to a traditional cheese farm. The property features a garden room, a permaculture garden, a vegetable garden, a food forest currently under development, and many herbs. The property and accommodations are not suitable if you have difficulty walking. There are many walking and biking trails along the coast, through the dunes, through the woods, and past charming villages. For example, you can cycle outside the dikes to Breskens, where you can take the bike-and-pedestrian ferry to the island of Walcheren (Vlissingen, Middelburg). You might even spot a seal on the Scheldt. The coastline is still peaceful and authentic and features beautiful, luxurious beach pavilions. Beautiful nature reserves include: Het Zwin and, closer by at a distance of 5 km, the Braakman forest nature reserve. These are interesting spots for birdwatchers. Beautiful historic cities in the area include Sluis, Bruges, and Ghent.
