Nature and surroundings

The Triglav National Park is the only national park in Slovenia. The park gets its name after Mount Triglav (literally meaning three-headed mountain) and its three peaks (or heads) rising right in the heart of the park. With its height of 2,864 metres, Triglav is the highest mountain in Slovenia and the highest peak of the Julian Alps. The Triglav National Park extends over the north-western part of Slovenia near the borders with Italy and Austria, in the south-eastern part of the Alpine massif, almost entirely covering the Eastern Julian Alps. It encompasses 840 square kilometres, which is four percent of Slovenia’s surface. It is among the oldest parks of its kind in Europe, the first conservation efforts dating back to 1924, when the Alpine Conservation Park was established.
