Flora and fauna

Slovenia is a great place to visit if you are a nature lover! It is easy to identify that flora and fauna differ per region. About 58.3% of the territory of Slovenia is covered in forests. The forests are an important natural resource, and logging is kept to a minimum. One-third of the region is covered by pine forests. However, the lime / linden tree, that is also a common type of tree in Slovenia is considered as a national symbol. The tree line can reach up to 1,800 meters. Further, the areas where conifers dominate the landscape in the Northern Alpine regions, you will mainly find deciduous trees, such as beech and oak, in the Southern regions. These are interspersed with various berry bushes, mosses and ferns. In the mountain areas you will mainly come across spruce, fir, and pine. The ancient forests provide an excellent habitat for many special animals, such as the wolf, lynx, bear, otter, pheasant and fox. So keep your eyes open during a walk!
