The Herdade de Alagães is located in southern Portugal, Alentejo, between the Castro Verde IBA Biosphere Reserve and the Guadiana Valley Natural Park and only 18 km from the lovely historical town of Mértola, whose roots go back to classical antiquity. We are dedicated to sustainable tourism, nature conservation and agroforestry. The Casa da Chaminé was built around a pre-existing chimney which was turned into a sitting area. The construction method was based on thermal bricks and cork filling to ensure energy-efficient comfort at all outside temperatures. The Casa has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large living room with an open kitchen, a total area of 124.5 m2. There is a small private pool and two outdoor terraces. The Herdade is registered as local accommodation 116096/AL.

Nature and surroundings

The land has significant landscape and wildlife interest. The property is crossed by an intermittent stream, the Ribeira de Alvacar, and it is located within a Natura 2000 area (Castro Verde IBA Biosphere Reserve). As such, it is a great place for birdwatching and many unique species can be seen here (e.g. Iberian imperial eagle, great bustard and black-bellied sandgrouse). Within an area of 180 ha there are several paths for nature walks and biking and you are free to roam. You might spot rabbits, hares, partridges and fallow deer. Most of the land was reforested with pine trees (Pinus pinea) in the 1990s, but there are also traditional olive groves, a small vineyard and various orchards. We collaborate with Mértola's Biodiversity station to monitor the species that occur. As Mértola is one of the least populated areas in Europe (with approximately 5 people/km2) you are sure to find peace and quiet here.

Beautifully decorated and fresh house with nice large rooms and two bathrooms and everything you could possibly need. We saw little of the area in a day and a half. Hiked once during which we saw tracks of several wild animals and partridges and many swallows. The nearby town of Mertola is wonderful.

    Nature, peace & environment: 4/5

This cottage is located in a very small village, near t village is not much but there is nature nearby. The village is very quiet. The house is beautiful the outside also, although t pool is more like a big pool. You have privacy outside but you are not invisible to the environment, although that environment is very quiet.

What does “contactless stay” mean?
You can stay here without personal contact with the host, for example via a key safe or digital access. A contactless stay does not always have to be mandatory.
