The hilly island is about 60 km from the mainland and is thus the furthest Croatian island from the mainland. The 90 km2 island, which is spared from mass tourism, is known for its beautiful beaches, bays and olive and wine cultivation. The island of Vis was a restricted military zone and therefore hardly accessible until 1991. However, this island, once settled by the Illyrians in the 4th century B.C., has had an impressive history. Sightseeing highlights include the Garibaldi Palace, the summer house of the Croatian poet Marin Gazarović and the Archaeological Museum. The parish church of Our Lady of Spilica is also worth a visit. Those seeking peace and quiet, those out for a dip, active vacationers, mariners and divers are all equally at home on the island of Vis. There are fantastic beaches and bays with emerald blue water, interesting diving spots, surrounding small islets with spectacles of nature like the “Blue Grotto” on Biševo, or the “Green Grotto” on Ravnik.
