The nature house is located in the Jan-Durkspolder, part of National Park the Alde Feanen. The Jan-Durkspolder is mainly known as a natural ice rink and 1 of the first places in the Netherlands where you can ride on natural ice. But it is also a true walhalla for many bird species. In the summer a breeding colony of spoonbills and black terns, but also many species of ducks and small songbirds feel at home in the very varied landscape of the polder. From reed land to swamp forest and from meadows to potholes, the Jan-Durkspolder has it all. Not only birds feel at home here, but also deer, hares, foxes and mustelids. The fish otter is also a permanent resident of the polder. A tunnel will soon be built under the road in front of the nature house so that he can safely cross over to the Wijde Ee.
