This cottage was originally a small farmhouse in the typical style of the Thiérache. We rebuilt it from ruins into an attractive and cozy cottage. On the ground floor (40 m2) you will find everything for 2 people: bedroom, bathroom and living room/kitchen (5x5m) with wood stove. Sheets and towels are provided. In summer it stays cool downstairs, in winter the wood stove makes the living space warm quickly. The kitchen is very fully equipped, so ideal if you love cooking. There is another bed in the attic, making separate sleeping possible. But beware: steep stairs, low beams and unheated (pitchers available). In front of the house is a south facing spacious 'cour' and behind the house a sheltered garden. The cottage stands on our large (3ha!) nature reserve to which you have free access. Among other things you can use a silence hut with views up to Belgium. On our property we rent out another cottage and in summer you can find campers (max. 6 spots and adults only).
Nature and surroundings
You will find us 20 km from the Belgian border in the 'Thiérache'. This area is a green oasis compared to the endless beet and potato fields of the Haut de France and the sheep landscape of the French Ardennes. Typical of the Thiérache are the hedgerows interspersed with pieces of forest, the many small roads and waterways and the quiet villages with castle churches. You can enjoy hiking, biking (bring your own, no rentals) and canoeing. In the meadows, flowers are still allowed to bloom and the cows can shelter under the trees from sun and rain. The area is not touristy; do not expect terraces or stores in the villages. So bring your own picnic. However, on Sundays and holidays (spring and summer) village festivals with flea markets are organized. Culturally, don't miss the Familistère in Guise (40 km), the little church in Jeantes (6 km) and the local cheese (Maroilles).
