Estate "Welna" is part of the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands, the Veluwe. It is 560 ha in size and consists mainly of forest and heathland. The surroundings of Welna changed from "wild and bye land" after the Middle Ages by human actions into heathland. Sheep farming allowed the heath culture landscape to maintain itself for a long time. The Polish word for wool is "welna," to which the naming of the estate may be related. In the 1940s, parts of these wastelands came into private ownership. These new owners have since then afforested most of the area through reclamation. In Epe and Nunspeet you can rent bicycles to take wonderful bike rides. The various restaurants nearby offer a range of delivery and takeaway meals.
