Nestled in the mountains of the lush Ardèche region, near Desaignes, stands this old schoolhouse, which was built here in 1900 for the children of the farms that were too far away from Desaignes, the medieval town located 6 km down the valley. The nature house is situated in the heart of the Parc Régional de l’Ardèche, in a hamlet with about 13 other cottages in the vicinity. The garden is enclosed by an old wall and offers plenty of privacy; from the house, you can walk straight into the forest and enjoy beautiful hikes. It’s an old house that wasn’t furnished for rental but for our own use. It’s fully equipped but not a super-luxurious home; however, it’s tastefully decorated with, among other things, modern art on the walls, so you’ll have to be open to that.
Nature and surroundings
The medieval town of Desaignes is located 6 km away along a small road through the woods and meadows; another 6 km further on is Lamastre, a larger town with more stores and supermarkets, where there’s a market every Tuesday and Saturday. In Desaignes, there’s a “plan d’eau”—a section of the river dammed off with a small beach and a slide where you can swim. Heading toward Lamastre, there’s another “plan d’eau” at Retourtour, and a little further in the other direction is a larger lake, Lac de Devestet. There are also all kinds of activities in the area, ranging from horseback riding to a large climbing forest.

Het huis is zeer ruim, we verbleven met 8 en we hadden meer dan ruimte genoeg. Het huis is heel authentiek en heeft erg veel charme. De tuin is ommuurd en heeft erg veel charme. Je kan steeds buiten zitten om te eten zowel in de zon als in de schaduw op warme dagen. Ook binnen staat er een grote ronde tafel waar meer dan plaats genoeg is. Er zijn grote potten en meer dan voldoende materiaal om te koken voor de groep. Een echte aanrader.
De streek is prachtig. Je loopt vanuit de tuin zo de bossen en heuvels in en kan prachtige wandelingen maken. Niet ver daar vandaan is een rivier afgedamd waar je kan zwemmen.
