Proastio is the oldest village of the municipality. The traditional culture is intense here. The village is set 6 klm away from Kardamili and oversees the Messenian Gulf from a Taygetos slope angle. Panigiris are held in the villages throughout the summer months. “Panigiri” is a centuries-old traditional festival and cultural event, where the patron saint is celebrated. The feast begins at the local church in the morning and is followed later by good music, food, local vine and lots of dancing. The ancient village of Kardamili mentioned in Homer's Iliad and home to Patrick Leigh Fermor is well worth exploring and also holds the international Jazz Festival each year. The surrounding mountain villages within hiking distance of Proastio Riding Center all offer deep history and beautiful architecture.
