Nature house in Belloc

The cottage is set free on a half-acre property of wildflower meadow, on a forest edge. The comfortable house, made of straw bales and loam, has everything for a relaxing vacation, including a well-equipped kitchen, underfloor heating and a bathroom with bathtub. There is a large covered private terrace and all around is a garden with spectacular views. The nature house fits perfectly into the unspoiled landscape. No wonder when you consider that most of the ecological building materials come from the immediate area: wood from the Pyrenees, straw bales from the surrounding grain fields, sand from the nearby river l'Hers and clay from our own soil. The walls are made of loam and straw bales, which makes for a pleasant indoor climate. The landlord built the house himself and will be happy to tell you more about this special and sustainable way of building.

This gîte is the ideal base to discover the Cathar country. From the terrace you even have a view of the last Cathar stronghold, Chateau de Montsegur! Just fifteen minutes away is the medieval town of Mirepoix. Here you will find a lively square, a market where you can taste plenty of local products and numerous restaurants and terraces. Furthermore, the region offers caves, theme parks for young and old and beautiful medieval cities such as Foix, Carcassonne and Saint-Lizier. Hiking trails start right from the property, including to the Touyre River (one kilometer) with picnic benches, several climbing walls and natural swimming pools. Or take a dip in Lac Montbel (five kilometers) with its sandy beach and water sports facilities. In spring and autumn many birdwatchers and nature lovers visit this area (in May for the rare orchids), in the winter months enjoy the winter sports areas here (Mont d'Olmes, Ax-les-Thermes).
