The Eifel is a beautiful nature reserve which, together with the Ardennes, is one of Europe's low mountain ranges. It covers a large part of the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. Part of the Eifel is called the Volcanic Eifel and that speaks volumes. Thousands of years ago, there was an active volcanic area here with eruptions that are still visible today. The many lakes (maars) in the area are flooded craters and are very popular with tourists. There are many marked hiking and cycling trails in the area that lead along the visible features of volcanic activity. Several museums in the area show the history (and future?) of the Volcanic Eifel. The Volcanic Eifel is only a stone's throw away from the Naturhaus.
