During your stay in the nature cottage in the middle of nature you will go back in time; pumping ice cold water with the hand pump, sawing and chopping wood for the wood stove, cooking in cast iron pans over a wood fire, reading your book by the light of an antique oil lamp, admiring the stars from the clearing in the forest, hearing the deer nearby rustling among the ferns looking for a place to sleep or picking medicinal herbs in the forest garden for a delicious herbal tea. Here you will find no contemporary comforts, but all the peace and fresh air. The nature cottage has an unobstructed view of the half-acre forest on all sides. It consists of a bedroom with a double bed and quilt, a simple sitting area with two rattan chairs, a robust dining table with wooden chairs and stools, a wood-burning stove, a simple kitchen with workstation, two-burner stove and a sink with hand pump. There is a simple compost toilet and a washroom with a shower stall and mirror. LED light with dimmer on a battery is available here. The dishes and hand shower are done with (boiled) water from the hand pump.
Nature and surroundings
The nature cottage is located in a clearing in a private forest of half a hectare with a stand of Scots pine, beech, oak, birch, chestnut and rowan with an undergrowth of rhododenderon, ferns and brambles. From the 19th-century beech avenue, take the driveway to the nature cottage in a clearing in the forest. There is a campfire spot, an ornamental garden and an herb garden. From the nature cottage a footpath goes through the forest to the back of the plot where you walk into the Bulskampveld, the largest protected nature reserve in Flanders. In the forest live squirrels, tawny owls, fallow deer, buzzards, blue tits, goldcrests, nuthatches, jackdaws, frogs, day and night butterflies, bats and dragonflies. In the Bulskampveld you will find forests, dry and wet heathland, fens and marshes, a bird-watching hut, a keep from the 11th century with accompanying a large medicinal herb garden and a classic English landscape garden with a castle from the 19th century. The nature cottage is located on the long-distance hiking trails GR129 and GR131. The nature cottage is 30 kilometers from the beach, 11 kilometers from Bruges and 30 kilometers from Ghent.
