Accommodation Antwerp

As the northernmost province of Belgium and its proximity to the Netherlands, France and Germany, the region of Antwerp is rich in history due to the never-ending feud between the three monarchies in the past. The historically rich past draws thousands of tourists to the cities of Antwerp, Mechelen and Lier among others. Undoubtedly, Antwerp is the most famous one. The city is one of the oldest throughout Europe and this is apparent from the rich and diverse architectural design of most of its buildings. Perhaps, one of the most important aspects of the region is the Antwerp port – the second largest seaport in Europe, providing for the immense development of infrastructure connecting the port with the rest of Europe.

Explore the parks

Although Belgium is one of the smallest European countries, its land is covered in beautiful and well-preserved nature, especially in the rural areas. The Antwerp province is home to a few natural reserves and parks which are an amazing option for a day spent in nature.

Oude Landen (or Ancient Countries in English) is a small natural reserve near Ekeren. A protected landscape for more than 40 years, this popular Flemish reserve received its statute as such after an outpour of local criticism towards it becoming a residential area. Located in a beautiful valley and home to a rich population of different birds such as the bluethroat or the nightingale, the songs of which will enchant any person nearby.

Activities

If you are in need of a calm day in the park, take your bike, your book or a blanket and visit Vrijbroek Park just outside Mechelen. On top of the amazing atmosphere and beautiful garden paths, Vrijbroek is also open and suitable for bikes. Moreover, the park has a must-visit magnificent rose garden with more than 100 different types of roses with an award for garden excellence.

An interesting place to visit in the region is the Fort 5. This place offers a colorful combination of past and present between its walls. Built to serve for protection, the fort and its surrounding areas serves different purposes today. The domain has been recognized as an official park with a hiking trail around the fort which will eventually lead you to the Hof Ter Linden castle (stop for a lunch at the brasserie on the premises, their beer is sublime). The fort itself today is partly a co-working space which houses many organizations. Moreover, there is a bee park and even field lab for schools. At the end of August, on a specific evening a special tour is organized to explore the caves of the bat sanctuary. The area is also popular for cyclists as the Brialmont route passes by this and the Brialmont fortresses altogether.

If history is your interest visit the Mastenbos – a circuit walking path will lead you through the historical heritage site turned into an educational memorial by the Antwerp municipality. A 10 kilometers long preserved German trench line from WWI with more than 60 intact bunkers and hundreds of relics remained hidden until 2007.
