Essence of Nature
Portugal's Mediterranean climate, mountains, forests, rivers, wetlands, heaths, and beaches provide a diverse range of ecosystems and are home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. The country is a nature lovers' paradise due to its remarkable variety of flora and fauna. The Algarve region in southern Portugal is known for its large number of orchid species. Please switch to the destinations tab to explore chalets with gardens to stay close to nature during your stay.
The orchid named after the part of its flowers that resembles a human figure is one of the more common species. The bee orchid, for example, gets its name from its odd similarity to something else, such as an insect (Ophrys apifera). The bloom of this strange plant resembles a bee landing on a tree. Although the Iberian lynx has lost habitat, it is the focus of conservation efforts. Wolves can be found in some parts of Portugal, but they are a very endangered carnivorous mammal nowadays.
There are several amphibian species in Portugal, and the Gold-striped salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica) is one of the uncommon ones. It's categorized as "vulnerable." This amphibian prefers clean streams and lives in mountain forests and caves. Its population is dwindling as a result of habitat loss and contamination of freshwater streams.
