In December 2003 we (Frans and Hetty) bought this property from Hetty's parents. Her father, together with his sister, had a bakery and small grocery store there.This purpose the building has not always had. Part of it was built around 1880 as a farm. In the early 20th century, Grandpa Meulensteen (her father's father) started a bakery there. Around 1960, the store was added. Her father, together with his sister, took over the bakery and store until his retirement. After taking over the property, we started remodeling it in 2004, which took a year. In January 2005, we moved in with our family. We used the bakery as a warehouse for a long time. Until it became really too full and we decided to convert it into living space in 2018. Once it was finished, Hetty's father enjoyed living there for several years. From May 2026, we will offer this "bakery" as a vacation home.
Nature and surroundings
This cottage is located just outside the Brabant village of Beugen on a spacious plot with orchard and vegetable garden. In the orchard is a garden room with sauna. Less than 3 km away is Boxmeer with all the amenities you could want, including a train station. The surroundings are easy to explore with a variety of hiking and biking trails. In five minutes you can walk to De Vilt (an old meander of the river Maas) where many bird watchers can enjoy themselves. Or explore by bicycle 'the Maasheggen' area, recognized by Unesco. And how about Nijmegen which can be reached within the hour via the specially built 'bicycle highway'. If you cross the bridge at Oeffelt, Germany is not far away once you have cycled through Gennep in Limburg. The city of Xanten is well worth a visit. Across the Maas in a southerly direction you will pass through the Maasduinen nature reserve and north at the St. Jansberg. And then there is the Peel with the forest and moorland in St. Antonis.
