This comfortable, 100% off-grid nature house is located in one of the most beautiful spots in the Vechtdal region of Overijssel, just east of Zwolle, atop the 60-meter-high Lemelerberg—one of the highest points in Salland. Tucked away among the trees, surrounded by nature and with a view of the heath, stands this detached wooden chalet. Abraham Ledeboer, a banker from Twente, had it shipped from Austria by train in 1925 as a kit. This unique heritage site, managed by Landschap Overijssel, has been transformed into a charming outdoor retreat for 2 to 5 people. Inside, you’ll find natural, sustainable materials from the By Mölle collection. Outside, you’ll experience peace, space, and quiet. Here, you’ll spend just as much time outdoors as you do indoors. At night, you’ll sleep in comfortable beds with eco-friendly By Mölle linens. What makes it truly special: the chalet is comfortable and 100% off-grid and self-sufficient, featuring a wood stove, solar panels, and a unique rainwater filtration system for the toilet, sink, and kitchen. You can take a shower at the nearby campground.
Nature and surroundings
This location is unique in the Netherlands. From the porch, you can step right into nature, with numerous biking and hiking trails right outside the door. Inside the chalet, you’ll find a folder with hiking maps of the surrounding area. The Lemelerberg is special because of its mix of heathland, sandy plains, forests, and springs. Covering about 1,000 hectares, it is the largest nature reserve managed by Landschap Overijssel and has been designated a Natura 2000 site by the European Union. More than 150,000 years ago, a massive ice cap covered the northern half of the Netherlands. This glacier carried rocks from Scandinavia and slowly pushed everything before it. This created a 78-meter-high hill: the Lemelerberg. From various vantage points, you can enjoy stunning views. For part of the year, the heath is grazed by a flock of about 200 sheep. It’s a wonderful area for biking and hiking. With a bit of luck, you might spot roe deer, sand lizards, badgers, martens, goshawks, buzzards, ravens, or nightjars. In winter, the great grey shrike overwinters here.

Living off the grid turned out to be easier than we expected. Using rainwater for the toilet and coffee/tea, you can get by just fine. There wasn’t much water pressure, but hey, that’s good for slowing down ;)
There’s a refrigerator, and that was absolutely essential on those hot days.
Our thanks and compliments to the nearby nature campground for letting us shower, charge our bikes, and fill up on drinking water!
The surroundings are very beautiful; we went on some lovely bike rides. The path near the house was the biggest obstacle (lots of loose sand). There are also beautiful hiking trails in the area.
For those who want to head into town, there are plenty of options in every direction. We had a great time spending a day in Ommen.Het off grid leven is ons meegevallen.
The cottage is truly surrounded by nature; you can hear all the birds (even the nightjar!) and watch the sun set from the porch. The flock of sheep was nearby. The cottage is spacious, and the porch makes it pleasant whether it’s warm out or serves as shelter from a light shower.
A very special place—we had a wonderful time!
This text is automatically translated.
