Nature and surroundings
Fort Uitermeer is hidden in a bend of the Vecht River, in the middle of a green and watery landscape. Reeds sway along the banks and give the area an almost hushed atmosphere. Here you can mostly hear the rustling of the wind, the rustling of the reeds and the cries of water birds. The open water, the meandering river and the surrounding meadows provide wide views that have a different character every season. For cyclists and hikers, this is an ideal environment: the routes along the Vecht take you along historic dikes, small bridges and quiet nature strips. What makes this place extra special is how nature is interwoven with history. Fort Uitermeer is part of the New Dutch Waterline and the Defence Line of Amsterdam.
