Our completely detached vacation home is located on the edge of the woods and fields. Whether on the front or back patio or on one of the small lawns, there’s always a spot to sit in one of the outdoor chairs—in the sun or shade—listening to the silence and the birds. From the hallway—which leads to three spacious bedrooms, a bathroom with a shower, and a separate toilet—you enter the living room. With windows on two sides, it’s bright, and sometimes you can see the herd of cows grazing. The bedrooms, each with a double bed, overlook the forest and stay pleasantly cool in the summer. The third bedroom, with a bunk bed and sink, features a quiet workspace. The kitchen, with a cozy serving hatch leading to the living room, is well-equipped with cooking utensils. There is a dishwasher, and the utility room has a washing machine and a large refrigerator. The house is mostly heated by electricity, though there is a gas heater in the living room. We consider the vacation home suitable for up to four adults and possibly two children.
Nature and surroundings
The Dwingelderveld is a beautiful area in Drenthe. Right from the house, you can take lovely walks across the fields, through the woods, and along or across the heathland with its small ponds. There are beautiful bike rides to enjoy between the various villages and along bike paths through nature. In Ruinen, you can find all your basic necessities. In the neighboring towns of Ansen and Dwingeloo, organic products are available for purchase. The area offers: the Dwingelderveld visitor center with a playground, the sheep herd, the Zaandplatte windmill, the radio telescope, gardens to explore, and various regional museums. Ruinen has a nice swimming pool. There are swimming lakes: the Blauwe Meer and Schoonhoven. In Diever, the Shakespeare Open-Air Theater performs in the summer. You can also take day trips to: the hunebeds near Havelte, Heerenveen with the Belvédère Museum, the Drents Museum in Assen, and the Westerbork Memorial Center. For children, Ruinerwold offers the Drentse Koe and the Boomkroonpad near Drouwen.

It’s a beautiful house. It has all the necessary amenities and more. There are screens on all the windows, and certain areas (the entryway, bedrooms, toilet, and bathroom) stay quite cool in warm weather if you keep the doors closed tightly. A comfortable house with a lovely, large, open garden. The location is also fantastic—right in the middle of nature. We saw and heard all kinds of birds flying by and even had a deer in the garden.
The cottage is beautifully situated next to Dwingelderveld National Park. You can walk right into the nature reserve from there. Birds, butterflies, and sometimes some livestock across the way. No traffic nearby. Spacious garden with both sunny and shady spots.
