This family-friendly and pet-friendly vacation home is nestled in a secluded spot in the woods on the outskirts of the village of Havelte. The cottage is entirely on one level and features two bedrooms, a living room/kitchen, and a bathroom with a toilet and shower. The large garden features various seating areas and terraces, culminating in a cozy outdoor greenhouse that provides extra living space and a unique retreat. Both inside and outside the cottage, wood is the key element: the interior is lined with beautiful wooden panels, and there are two large old oak trees in the garden. It’s lovely to dine outdoors at the patio table, and you can prepare your meal on the barbecue. At the back of the garden, near the fire pit, the kids can enjoy roasting marshmallows, and if it gets a bit colder, you can build a fire in several spots throughout the garden. In short: a vacation home that’s perfect for families and friends, but also the ideal base for a “workation” thanks to a workspace with a view!

Nature and surroundings

This nature house in the woods is located in Havelte, a small village north of Meppel in the province of Drenthe—the most forested province in the Netherlands and famous for its beautiful nature reserves. The area is best known for its unique hiking and biking trails through heathlands, forests, and small lakes. Dwingelderveld National Park is home to nearly 300 bird species, more than sixty ponds and peat bogs, and two flocks of Drenthe heath sheep, tended by a shepherd. The hunebeds are also just around the corner. Havelte is even home to the third-largest hunebed in the Netherlands. And in De Weerribben National Park, you can enjoy wonderful hiking and biking. But the best way to explore this national park is by boat. Various canoe routes take you past the most beautiful spots. In short: forests and water right around the corner! And finally, Havelte also offers plenty of recreational sports activities. For example, you can play golf on the 18-hole course, swim at the outdoor pool, play tennis, or visit one of the nearby riding stables.

We really had a wonderful time—what a lovely cottage in a beautiful location! It’s fully equipped, with a very clean bathroom, a nice kitchen, comfortable beds, and nice furniture (including a washer/dryer, oven/range, and dishwasher). There were also plenty of toys, magazines, and books—we and the kids practically didn’t have to bring anything with us. There’s a big TV, but we didn’t turn it on. Instead, we relaxed in the garden on the lounge chairs, played board games, or read a good book or magazine. There’s a trampoline for the kids, and there was plenty of space for an inflatable pool. The garden is surrounded by lots of greenery and trees, which provides plenty of privacy.

Tip: Bring a fan for hot days (it was actually quite hot during the first week of our stay). And bring barista cups for the coffee machine—they’re not available at the local AH. :-)

The surroundings are absolutely beautiful—just what you’d expect from Drenthe: heathland and forests. There are lovely hiking trails right around the corner. We rented bikes in the village and went on some lovely rides. It’s also a great spot for mountain biking or gravel biking. Very wooded, with charming villages full of thatched-roof houses. There are good amenities nearby, such as a supermarket (with a charging station), bike rentals, an outdoor swimming pool, and—a bit further away—several small lakes where you can swim. Right around the cottage, it’s peaceful, and you feel like you’re right in the middle of the forest with all the birdsong. There’s plenty for the kids to do nearby, such as the large (water) playground at the Drentse Koe in Ruinerwold or the Duinen Zathe amusement park in Appelscha. And, of course, there are plenty of lakes for swimming.

We had a great time and would love to come back! Nice atmosphere in the cottage and despite the rain we had a great time both inside and in nature. Minus point is that it was a little difficult reading on the couch at night with the big light, but that is nothing compared to the rest.

What a cozy, complete and well cared for cottage! For the kids the toys (and games) were ideal and it was great that the beds were already made. Spacious garden around it with all the trimmings and from the quiet and spacious park you can walk into the woods. The Havelterberg nearby is beautiful and facilities are nearby. We enjoyed!

What a wonderful place, we enjoyed it immensely! The cottage is furnished with love. Nice blankets everywhere for the cold days. Fire pits in the spacious garden which we thoroughly enjoyed. Also the trampoline was a great success. The cottage is in a beautiful place and has so many possibilities for beautiful bike rides and walking routes.Meppel is just 15 min drive and also a really nice place to visit. The hunebedden visit is a must, from Haveltje you walk there in a nice walk to. In short, we enjoyed it immensely and MUST return from the children and we really just agree.
