Nature and surroundings
Our property is located in the heart of the Schagerwad, a 100-hectare nature reserve just outside Schagen. This area is known for its meadow birds. The black-tailed godwit, lapwing, oystercatcher, and redshank are common visitors in the spring. In the fall and winter, you’ll see teals, shovelers, and hundreds of wigeons. During migration season, in late March and April, you can see waders such as the bar-tailed godwit, common sandpiper, common snipe, ruff, curlew, golden plover, white-throated needletail, black-tailed godwit, and green-legged sandpiper. Groups of geese are present year-round. You can also spot kingfishers and bitterns on the property, and of course, our kestrel nest. Our cottage is also located 3 km from the center of Schagen, home to the well-known West Frisian market on Thursdays. The beach and the forest are 10 km away. Bicycle routes start right from our yard; in the spring, they wind past the bulb fields and through the beautiful polder landscape dotted with many farms.
