Located near the village of Maarssen and a little further away the city of Utrecht, the inhabited world with all its amenities is nearby and easily accessible. The nature house is located in Natura 2000 area. This means that in this area animals, plants and their natural habitat are protected by the government against for example noise, vibration and pollution. The characteristic landscape of watercourses and peninsulas is the result of peat extraction, which was used as fuel. The resilience of the peat soil can be felt when you walk on an island. The lake area lies at the foot of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, where the soil consists of sand layers through which rainwater is led underground towards the Vechtdal. In the intermediate peat area, the water is forced upward through the soil. The seepage water is particularly clean because the sand layers act as filters.
