This nature house is situated in a beautiful location in Twente, within a large nature reserve. It features 20,000 m² of private grounds. The nature house was built in 1925 as a hunting lodge and has recently been renovated while retaining its authentic character. It is situated in a unique spot where you can relax and enjoy nature in complete privacy. An ideal location to unwind on the large porch, by the fireplace, or in the wood-fired hot tub (optional). The cottage is simple and “back to basics” (no Wi-Fi, TV, or central heating). It has electricity and running water from its own well and is equipped with new plumbing fixtures (toilet and shower). There is a living room with a wood stove. The kitchen has a refrigerator, small oven, and a 2-burner gas stove. The bedroom is in the attic and features skylights. The veranda is accessible from the living room through two French doors. From the veranda, you can walk directly into the nature reserve. If you’re leaving on Sunday, you may use the cottage until 4:00 PM.

Nature and surroundings

The forest cabin is located in the heart of the Lonnekerberg nature reserve. This area is part of a belt of nature reserves along the Oldenzaal-Enschede moraine and consists of old, diverse woodland, with remnants of heathland and meandering streams. Due to its unique location and soil composition, the area is home to a wealth of rare flora and fauna. In the immediate vicinity of the forest cabin are cycling, mountain biking, and hiking trails that wind through the beautiful Twente bocage landscape, where forests and nature reserves alternate with old farmhouses, meadows, and fields. Nearby is the former Twente Air Base, where you can experience both nature and history; events are occasionally held there as well. The cottage is located in the middle of nowhere; the charming village of Lonneker, with a few shops, restaurants, and outdoor cafes, is easily accessible on foot or by bike (2 km). The Hanseatic city of Oldenzaal is approximately 5 km away. Enschede and Hengelo are approximately 10 km away.

We had a wonderful vacation—the cottage, the surroundings, and a little deer right outside our door this morning. In a word, amazing. We’d love to come back.

The cottage was absolutely perfect. They thought of everything. Think of: mosquito spray, a fan, kitchen supplies, window screens, fire-starting supplies, blankets, and even a BBQ! It’s these little (but definitely essential) things that make the stay super comfortable. It’s back to basics, but with all the comforts you need to easily stay here for days. The hostess was very helpful and communicative; we could text her with any questions. Other than that, the surroundings are of course beautiful; you’re just a 15-minute drive from the city, and the hot tub was definitely a nice bonus. It’s definitely worth the extra money. I told friends and family: for us, it was more than worth the 2-hour drive and the money! We had such a great time.

    Nature, peace & environment: 5 /5

This cottage is so peaceful. You really are right in the middle of the forest. Most of the time, it was quiet, with nothing but birds singing. But sometimes we did hear cars roaring in the distance (I think in the city), and every now and then you hear people talking on the walking path next to it. But that doesn’t disturb the overall peace! I would still recommend going here. It’s also a wonderful place for a walk.
