The nature house is a paradise on the Markermeer, next to a nature reserve of the Dutch Forestry Commission in the seventeenth-century town of Edam, about 22 kilometers above Amsterdam. De Meeuwen is located 1.5 km from the city center, on the IJsselmeerdijk. Behind the nature house is the green oasis of Fort Edam, part of the UNESCO protected Defence Line of Amsterdam. Inside this fort is a historical museum (mainly about WW1 for which the fort was built), a nature museum, a radio-telegraphy museum and an impressive underground labyrinth of large dark corridors. Kingfishers nest in the wall of the fort moat each year and on the fort itself tree falcons, long-eared owls, sparrows and many songbirds. The cottage has a large, lushly planted garden. Guests have unlimited access to that garden and can go up to the roof for views of the harbor, the fort and the Markermeer.
Nature and surroundings
Bird species that occur in and around the garden include great spotted woodpecker, greenfinch, garden warbler, chiffchaff, house martin, goldfinch, great tit, blue tit, house martin, tree creeper, dunnock, wood pigeon, kingfisher, chaffinch, reed warbler, tree falcon, fitis, pheasant, robin, wren, blackcap, sparrow hawk and long-eared owl. Butterfly species in the garden: atalanta, day peacock, thistle butterfly, hummingbird butterfly, cabbage white, icarus blue, gamma owl, little fox, red orphan, house moth, lemon butterfly, spotted sandpiper, orange tip, small spring chickadee, darling and chickadee aurelia. Behind The Gulls and Fort Edam are meadows with numerous hares and many species of meadow birds such as lapwings, oystercatchers, shelducks, redshanks and black-tailed godwits, as well as rarer species such as spoonbills, avocets, egrets, shovelers, crake ducks, curlews and even ruffs. I can tell you a lot about the many animals and plants that surround The Gulls, as I have had a passion for nature since childhood.

Tinie en Gerard July 14, 2025 General rating:very quiet place with beautiful garden and beautiful surroundings
Nature, peace & environment:A nice artistic house with lots of art in the house. The outside does desire some maintenance, but inside was okay as far as we were concerned. Nice spontaneous host. Richly stocked refrigerator and fruit bowl.
Leuke spontane gastheer. Rijk voorziene koelkast en fruitschaal. This text is automatically translated. -
Gees September 16, 2024 General rating:The cottage is very cozy and quite large. It is a pleasure to stay in this cottage, the history of the cottage is felt in a pleasant way. The decoration is done with care, fine furniture and in particular a great comfortable bed. There is some overdue maintenance but it did not bother me.
Nature, peace & environment:The cottage itself is in a quiet place, opposite a dike and has a large (shared) garden that I enjoyed. Around the corner from the cottage you can bike or walk straight into nature towards Warder.

Robin August 8, 2024 General rating:We came to Edam by bicycle and were somewhat pleased that our host surprised us on arrival with a well-stocked refrigerator. Staying at The Seagulls we found to be an experience. The wild garden is pleasant, the interior of the house "cozy" and the sitting area on the waterfront a nice place to end the day at night. The house may need a lick of paint on the outside; we found it charming and partly because of that, an experience we wouldn't have wanted to miss.
Nature, peace & environment:We can agree with the comments in all the other reviews. Those who want to explore the IJsselmeer further will find here a very nice base. Nature is always 'around the corner'. House De Meeuwen is located on the dike with little traffic.
