Let me start with hygiene. I understand that you can never please everyone and what one person finds clean is not clean enough for another. Somewhere in the reviews before I booked I read another review of 'Not suitable for people looking for a perfectly clean cottage'... but.... this did exceed my expectations. I understand that in a cottage/bungalow in that area you are more likely to find a spider or other critter. However, I got the strong impression that it had not been cleaned for months, if not longer. In the kitchen there were still two fly ribbons including the collected 'catch', just like one fly ribbon in the living room. I found both an unappetizing sight. When grabbing various kitchen utensils on the kitchen counter, I had to reach through I don't know how many cobwebs and the cutting board I grabbed I even had to pull loose from the many cobwebs between the board and the wall where several spiders got out.
Ditto for the switch for the light above the living room table: I had to reach through a lot of cobwebs to reach that switch. The windowsills, countertop or floor directly under the windows, except for the bedroom, were littered with dead flies and other insects and the windows also had masses of cobwebs.

The bathroom: From my previous job (in the bungalows) I know that mold is a problem in practically every bungalow, but the black water that appeared when cleaning with some brushes here and there made it pretty clear to me: this place hadn't been thoroughly cleaned for a long time, because mold often can't be easily removed.
The bathroom itself is quite a challenge anyway: I am young, able-bodied, athletic and agile, but even I found getting out of the bathroom quite a bit creepy because you have to wriggle a bit past the toilet and there is practically nothing (except for the walls of the shower cabin and the door jamb) to hold on to properly. The fact that there is no shelf or grate in the cabin to put/put shampoo or soap on does not help. All in all, I was so embarrassed mainly because of the lack of beauty that I almost cancelled the visit I was to receive shortly after. I spent 6 hours cleaning thoroughly with all-purpose cleaners, brushes, dishcloths and the vacuum cleaner.

Actually the only major drawback I think is the lack of a sink. I didn't want to shower every day, but washing in the kitchen, if you are alone and therefore don't wash dishes every day, is actually always a hassle with the dishes that will be there. Also, a larger mirror would not be a luxury. The bedroom is very basic: the bed base seems to be a box spring without legs, so that I, young and well on my feet and certainly not very tall at 1.70, had some trouble getting out of bed in the morning because it was very low. There is also no bedside table or shelf to put glasses and/or a flashlight on; there is no curtain but a wooden blinds which have seen better days: I had difficulty raising (and lowering) the blinds to easily open the window for airing, pieces of wood from the "slats" have broken off on both sides, and the rod that tilts the blinds is missing. Turning the peg that controls the closing and opening with my fingers meant that I could only tilt them 60 degrees, that was as far as I could go. As a result, a lot of light is coming in, which I solved with towels and pegs. The small table in the living room is falling apart. I don't mind corny furnishings at all, but you couldn't pick up the table without a part falling out. The first time this happened after picking it up and putting it down again, which disturbed the balance to such an extent that the table toppled over with stuff placed on it (luckily empty cup and laptop) and all. The sofa bed has (apparently) been damaged at some point: just to see how hard or easy it was, I unfolded it and was quite impressed. But the left side (if you stand in front of it and look at it) is obviously loose and the landlord also warns not to move the sofa bed because of this problem. The oven door does not close properly anymore. The landlord knows this and so there is a wooden stick ready to push it shut against the floor. If the rest were in order, I would turn a blind eye to this as "nice and different," but all in all it does give the impression that it has all had its best time. Leaving the cottage broom clean is somewhat difficult because the hand broom from the dustpan and brush is missing. There is only an ordinary handle broom. Also the split axe for the wood in the wood stove, mentioned in the welcome manual, unfortunately turned out not to be present in the shed, while I had been looking forward to unleashing some aggression on a few blocks of wood a few times. It is a pity that the road past the cottage has quite heavy traffic (I was there during harvest time) and the cottage is about 10-12 meters from this road. Huge agricultural vehicles and some trucks and still quite a bit of car traffic passed by during the two weeks I was there. Because it's a very tight road, you also shouldn't be surprised if a truck comes to a stop early in the morning and has to give way to an oncoming car with reverse alarm. All in all, I won't book this cottage again. I understand that nature house.nl is the first to contact the landlord in case of complaints so that they may be resolved immediately, but this was a lot at once and I was on vacation to be on my own for a while, so then you do not feel like possibly hours of people on the floor to resolve the issues mentioned. Response of landlord: "The guest was right at that time the house was not as clean as it should be. However the guest wanted to stay in the cottage for another week which was not possible. Presumably he could express his anger about this in this extremely negative review in which he does his best to tear down the nature house as much as possible. As a landlord you are powerless against this.''

    Nature, peace & environment: 3 /5

Plenty of birds (woodpeckers, treecreepers, tits, finches and birds of prey to see right around the cottage (but they are very shy compared to other places I know) and especially the tawny owls can sometimes be heard amazingly well at night. The cows/farm and horses near the cottage didn't bother me much, although I can imagine that people who want to enjoy the silence outside in the evening (after 10 o'clock for example) might find the work sounds (or sounds made by the cows in the feeding racks, no idea) unpleasant or even irritating. In the garden, however, you may have to be careful: during my stay I discovered a wasp nest in the ground in two places. It's part of the job and fortunately they had plenty of wood pulp from pieces of tree trunk so they hardly ever bothered me (although you're less comfortable sitting outside if you don't like those animals). Nature reserve De Vloeiweide at, what will it be, 5 minutes walk from the cottage is a must, especially on windless days. Then it is un-Dutch quiet there and I have sometimes walked for tens of minutes without encountering a single other person. Also the Krabbebossen a little further away had a mystical touch that I sometimes miss in some other forests.
