The landscape around Norg is formed by ash trees, stream valleys, forests and heathlands. The Norger Esdorpen Landscape includes the Norgerholt and the Tonckensbos. Between Norg, Peest and Donderen is the Noordsche Veld, where you imagine yourself on the large, quiet heathland of old. Scottish Highlanders and a beautiful herd of land goats have taken over the sheep herd's job. They create an old-fashioned heathland, where vipers, lizards and birds such as curlews and stonechat sparrows feel at home. The North Field is of international importance archaeologically. You will find, on the road between Peest and Zeijen, a dolmen and numerous burial mounds and old field complexes, the so-called celtic fields. Also near Westervelde, a beautiful old village, you can see a hunebed. Zuidvelde is an attractive little village with pretty farmhouses. In Veenhuizen you will find a permanent exhibition in the Gevangenismuseum about the history of the prison system and the development of this special village, the beggar's colony and the State work institutions.
